Join local fruit tree expert Andrew Lear to find out more about the history of orchards and fruit trees around the Tay, from the Carse of Gowrie, to Perth, Abernethy and Newburgh.
Apples, pears and plums have been grown on the Carse of Gowrie since Medieval monks planted the first orchards on the then recently drained land in the 12th Century. In the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries fruit from these extensive orchards was sold as far afield as London whilst pioneering orchard- men bred new varieties in extensive nurseries on the slopes of Kinnoull Hill and on the Carse. Today, only a few small remnants remain, but these fragments are historically important, as a reminder of our fruit growing heritage, living testaments to our ground-breaking orchard-men and as havens for enigmatic local varieties.
