Free Bushcraft events for families over the October Tattie Holidays

Join Malcolm Handoll of Five Senses up at the Shed at Kinnoull Hill

Each day there is two different sessions on five topics. Chose from Survival Skills, Shelter Building, Navigation, Get Knotted, Fire Making & Control or all 5!

For families and adults of all abilities.

The sessions are intended to be fun and packed full of skills, giving practical tips to increase confidence and to spark interest in enjoying the amazing countryside of Scotland.

Under 16s to be accompanied by an adult guardian. Under 18s to have parental / guardian consent. No minimum age, as parents can bring their children.

Location: Park at Jubilee car park, based at The Shed.

Toilets and wet weather shelter available, plus means to make hot drinks.

Instructor and Leader: Malcolm Handoll of Five Senses, has been teaching outdoor skills, bushcraft and survival for 30 years, specialising in mountain, coast and natural navigation, friction fire making, foraging and emergency shelters.

Workshop details

Survival Skills for Scottish Outdoors

How to look after yourself in the wilder parts of Scotland in challenging weather. We will identify the priorities for safety, basics of equipment and how to prepare and avoid trouble while having adventures. Practical work will include making emergency shelters, getting help, making fire and essential wayfinding.

Fire Making and Control

Get hands-on experience making fires by various methods, including friction. We will begin with foraging for materials, types of fuel, dealing with wet and windy conditions, safety and control. Afterwards we will look at campfires and their uses, making safe and leaving no trace.

Navigation 

Morning: ‘micro’ with map & landscape interpretation; Afternoon: natural navigation

How to not get lost and interpreting the map and landscape. Real practical sessions teaching how to move safely across the land in all conditions. The day is split into two halves starting with maps and compass, timing and pacing to know your position in the landscape without GPS. The afternoon session will demonstrate the relationship of land with Sun, wind and vegetation, showing how to read the world around you.

Shelter Building

Learn the principles and designs of shelters, whether for emergency survival, concealment or protection. Get hands-on experience trying various shelter building techniques and learn how to design and construct given the limitations of materials, time and physical ability. Take away a skill set that leads to lots of fun, freedom and safety.

Get Knotted

How to make string using plant fibres. Teach your hands how to manufacture this essential and neglected tool from human evolution. Learn how to twist and plait, the best knots and how to use these for repairs, traps, fire bows. Given enough time, you could move megaliths!
